Cobalt in Canada: Sustainable projects attracting global investors

Although the UK is not a significant producer of cobalt, the country is starting to see a wave of investment in cobalt mining and recycling projects, driven by the need to diversify its sources of supply for the growing electric vehicle industry. With the transition to a low-carbon energy system, the UK has committed to reducing its reliance on imports of critical metals such as cobalt, and is looking for ways to develop a sustainable domestic supply chain.

The UK Cobalt Project, operated by First Cobalt Corporation, is laying the groundwork to make the UK a major player in cobalt production in Europe. Located in the West Cumbria region, the project aims to establish a cobalt processing plant that draws on both local reserves and old battery waste for cobalt recovery, reinforcing the project's circular approach.

First Cobalt's project seeks to leverage advances in recycling technologies to extract cobalt from used batteries, an increasingly important source of cobalt supply due to the growing demand for EVs and energy storage. The initiative is also designed to be sustainable, using renewable energy sources and minimizing the environmental impact of the recycling process.

Investors looking to get involved in the UK's cobalt supply chain have the opportunity to participate in an expanding sector, supported by government policies that encourage sustainability and security of supply. Projects such as First Cobalt's represent an attractive opportunity to diversify investment portfolios, with a focus on responsible mining and resource reuse.

The UK government has expressed support for this initiative as part of its Green Recovery Plan, which promotes investment in clean technologies and the construction of lithium and cobalt battery infrastructure. This plan includes tax incentives and investment funds for projects that help reduce the carbon footprint and promote energy independence.
